Narrative:
Leaving 10;000 ft; slowly cycled 'no smoking' sign control to notify flight attendants. Upon landing we were told there was no 'double chime'. Flight attendants barely made it to their seats in time for landing and did not finish the usual announcements. At the gate we cycled the no smoking sign. On this aircraft the chime sounds when turning off the sign; but does not chime when returning it to the 'on' position. Tried several times at the gate. Highly experienced flight attendants felt their safety was at risk. I believe that all of our 777's should be checked for this anomaly and that consideration should be given for adding our PA announcement; 'flight attendants prepare for landing.'
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B777 pilot reported that the flight attendant approach preparation double chime alert did not function properly because it chimed only once when the NO SMOKING sign switch was turned OFF but not when it was turned back ON.
