Narrative:
La center cleared us to maintain 280 KTS and cross jackk at 10;000 ft on the lyndi RNAV STAR into san. The [tactical] speed of 280K was [entered] into the FMS. We checked on with socal approach just prior to jackk as we were descending who then cleared us to descend via lyndi and; after lyndi; cleared RNAV 27 into san. After receiving the new clearance and before leveling at 10;000 ft I changed the altitude preselect to 5;000 ft; the lowest altitude on the arrival. Since we were cleared for the approach; I selected lvl change so we could arm the final approach mode. I looked at the FMS to confirm the final approach mode was activated. Captain then reminded me about 280 tactical speed and that is when I looked at the altimeter and saw 9;300 ft. I disconnected autopilot and slowed to 250 KTS. Socal never queried us on our airspeed. I erred by selecting 5;000 ft in the altitude preselect before leveling at 10;000 ft and forgetting the ATC assigned speed. I was distracted by frequency change at jackk; being cleared for the approach that far away from the airport and confirming final approach mode was activated.I should not have changed the altitude preselect from 10;000 ft until verifying airspeed was 250 KTS or less.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: While descending on the LYNDI RNAV STAR to SAN at an assigned tactical speed of 280 KTS the First Officer inadvertently set the altitude alert at 5;000 FT for the crossing at LYNDI when cleared for the RNAV Runway 27 approach; forgetting to reset the airspeed to comply with the 250 KTS restriction below 10;000 FT.
