Narrative:
Center gave us a clearance to cross a point 20 mi northeast of ft wayne VOR at FL230. I acknowledged the clearance and selected 23,000 in the flight guidance panel and armed it to autocapture at FL230. On approaching FL240 the captain manually engaged the altitude hold and we leveled off at 24,000. We had problems earlier with the autoplt not capturing the selected altitude and we thought the same thing had occurred this time. By the time we realized we had leveled off at the wrong altitude we were 10 mi past our descent point and center was calling to check on our altitude. We immediately started our descent to FL230. No conflict occurred. Supplemental information from acn 123405: after leveling at FL240 in order to comply with a crossing restriction issued by ZAU, we had been instructed to cross 20 north fwa at 230 and we were now 30 north.
