Narrative:

Taxi clearance received and read back, 'taxi to 12R via P, C, B txwys.' all taxi and before takeoff checklists accomplished, as per aircraft flight manual and company operating procedures. As we were approaching the intersection of 12L on taxiway D, we observed a company airlines medium large transport taxi diagonally across the approach of 12L, continuing onto taxiway east and into position on runway 12R. About that same time, ground control advised to 'hold short on taxiway D, monitor tower on 118.7.' I switched to 118.7 on radio. We both visually cleared runway 12L's approach area and the first officer continued taxiing to and held short of runway 12R. As we were crossing runway 12L, the medium large transport was cleared for takeoff on runway 12R. I was advising the first officer to carefully approach the 12R hold lines, and when we take the runway for takeoff, that we both verify runway heading on our respective heading indicator to ensure we were not on runway 17. While holding short, tower advised we had just crossed an active runway west/O clearance. There was no traffic conflict involved. While en route we discussed the incident: 1) first officer had copied ATIS information and ATC clearance as per company operating procedures. 2) first officer said on departure he didn't pay much attention to runway in use information because he believed it was ground control's job to get you to the runway. This is an example of why pilots should familiarize themselves with all available information concerning the flight. Also, from now on, I will ensure all first officer's copy all information from ATIS for both arrival and departure. This incident will be discussed in upcoming ground school classes. 3) the hobby airport layout concerning runways 12L, 12R, and 17, the txwys D and east, should required ground controllers to verify that airplanes approaching runway 12L on taxiway D understand they need a clearance to cross when it is active.

Title: MLG FLT CREW TAXIED ACROSS ACTIVE RWY WITHOUT CLRNC.

Narrative: TAXI CLRNC RECEIVED AND READ BACK, 'TAXI TO 12R VIA P, C, B TXWYS.' ALL TAXI AND BEFORE TKOF CHKLISTS ACCOMPLISHED, AS PER ACFT FLT MANUAL AND COMPANY OPERATING PROCS. AS WE WERE APCHING THE INTXN OF 12L ON TXWY D, WE OBSERVED A COMPANY AIRLINES MLG TAXI DIAGONALLY ACROSS THE APCH OF 12L, CONTINUING ONTO TXWY E AND INTO POS ON RWY 12R. ABOUT THAT SAME TIME, GND CTL ADVISED TO 'HOLD SHORT ON TXWY D, MONITOR TWR ON 118.7.' I SWITCHED TO 118.7 ON RADIO. WE BOTH VISUALLY CLRED RWY 12L'S APCH AREA AND THE F/O CONTINUED TAXIING TO AND HELD SHORT OF RWY 12R. AS WE WERE XING RWY 12L, THE MLG WAS CLRED FOR TKOF ON RWY 12R. I WAS ADVISING THE F/O TO CAREFULLY APCH THE 12R HOLD LINES, AND WHEN WE TAKE THE RWY FOR TKOF, THAT WE BOTH VERIFY RWY HDG ON OUR RESPECTIVE HDG INDICATOR TO ENSURE WE WERE NOT ON RWY 17. WHILE HOLDING SHORT, TWR ADVISED WE HAD JUST CROSSED AN ACTIVE RWY W/O CLRNC. THERE WAS NO TFC CONFLICT INVOLVED. WHILE ENRTE WE DISCUSSED THE INCIDENT: 1) F/O HAD COPIED ATIS INFO AND ATC CLRNC AS PER COMPANY OPERATING PROCS. 2) F/O SAID ON DEP HE DIDN'T PAY MUCH ATTN TO RWY IN USE INFO BECAUSE HE BELIEVED IT WAS GND CTL'S JOB TO GET YOU TO THE RWY. THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF WHY PLTS SHOULD FAMILIARIZE THEMSELVES WITH ALL AVAILABLE INFO CONCERNING THE FLT. ALSO, FROM NOW ON, I WILL ENSURE ALL F/O'S COPY ALL INFO FROM ATIS FOR BOTH ARR AND DEP. THIS INCIDENT WILL BE DISCUSSED IN UPCOMING GND SCHOOL CLASSES. 3) THE HOBBY ARPT LAYOUT CONCERNING RWYS 12L, 12R, AND 17, THE TXWYS D AND E, SHOULD REQUIRED GND CTLRS TO VERIFY THAT AIRPLANES APCHING RWY 12L ON TXWY D UNDERSTAND THEY NEED A CLRNC TO CROSS WHEN IT IS ACTIVE.
