Narrative:
Departed orlando airport for phl. On climb out, the right a/C distribution duct ruptured in the right pack bay area. Within seconds the aircraft was enveloped in smoke. The condition in the cabin was immediately reported to me by the senior F/a. I instructed her to secure the cabin and prepare for a return landing. I directed the first officer to inform departure control of our condition and that we were returning to the field. He also sent a message to the company. During our return I informed the passenger to stay in their seats, remain calm, and we would have them on the ground in a few mins. A normal landing on 17 at mco was made. Taxi into the terminal and deplaning were normal and west/O incident. All appropriate authorities were notified and debriefed on the situation. The flight was cancelled and passenger bused to a hotel. The crew did a superb job in handling their jobs. In addition, orlando airport personnel were first rate in their performance assisting us. Fortunately, the incident occurred near the airport where we were able to return to land before the situation became worse.
