Narrative:
Picked up the airplane on scheduled crew swap. Noticed in reviewing the log that service inspection had apparently lapsed. Called dispatch and talked with company's 'maintenance coordinator' who informed me that an inspection had been performed on the airplane at xx:10 am on mon. It was concluded that the inspection therefore had been done as required and the maintenance staff had forgotten to sign the log so stating. At the direction of the coordinator (a maintenance supervisor), I made a notation in the log that the inspection had been completed as per his name, and we departed for washington, dc. Well, upon arriving in washington, I received a phone call from this person who then said he made a mistake. He said that the plane was to have been inspected on the 9TH but that it had not been completed. Our maintenance staff in dca then immediately completed the required inspection before we continued the remainder of trip. I don't know what to conclude from this west/O sounding like a cynic, like don't take anyone's work for it when they tell you somethings been done? I do wish that the one or two capts who had flown the airplane before I got it had taken the time to look at the log as closely as I did. It would have saved a lot of 'headaches'.

Title: FLT CREW FLEW A COMMUTER MDT AFTER THE SERVICE INSPECTION HAD EXPIRED.
Narrative: PICKED UP THE AIRPLANE ON SCHEDULED CREW SWAP. NOTICED IN REVIEWING THE LOG THAT SVC INSPECTION HAD APPARENTLY LAPSED. CALLED DISPATCH AND TALKED WITH COMPANY'S 'MAINT COORDINATOR' WHO INFORMED ME THAT AN INSPECTION HAD BEEN PERFORMED ON THE AIRPLANE AT XX:10 AM ON MON. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE INSPECTION THEREFORE HAD BEEN DONE AS REQUIRED AND THE MAINT STAFF HAD FORGOTTEN TO SIGN THE LOG SO STATING. AT THE DIRECTION OF THE COORDINATOR (A MAINT SUPVR), I MADE A NOTATION IN THE LOG THAT THE INSPECTION HAD BEEN COMPLETED AS PER HIS NAME, AND WE DEPARTED FOR WASHINGTON, DC. OUR MAINT STAFF IN DCA THEN IMMEDIATELY COMPLETED THE REQUIRED INSPECTION BEFORE WE CONTINUED THE REMAINDER OF TRIP. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO CONCLUDE FROM THIS W/O SOUNDING LIKE A CYNIC, LIKE DON'T TAKE ANYONE'S WORK FOR IT WHEN THEY TELL YOU SOMETHINGS BEEN DONE? I DO WISH THAT THE ONE OR TWO CAPTS WHO HAD FLOWN THE AIRPLANE BEFORE I GOT IT HAD TAKEN THE TIME TO LOOK AT THE LOG AS CLOSELY AS I DID. IT WOULD HAVE SAVED A LOT OF 'HEADACHES'.
