Narrative:
I made a 45 degree entrance at runway midpoint to right hand downwind for runway 35 (active) at pattern altitude (PA). I observed no aircraft on downwind. I flew aircraft downwind at PA to about 1/2 mi downwind of runway threshold. I observed no aircraft on base or final. I turned right hand base at about 1/2 mi downwind of threshold. I observed a high wing trainer flying the base heading above PA about 1 mi further downwind. I saw no other aircraft an any altitude downwind of the runway threshold. I descended to visibility G/south indicator glide path and flew glide path toward threshold. My ground speed was low due to head winds of 25-30 KTS. Another aircraft (high wing, 4 or more seats) emerged from under my aircraft about 1/8 mi downwind of threshold. The other aircraft was about 100' below. I didn't see it on downwind, base or long final. It may have executed a low, fast straight-in approach to this uncontrolled field. My aircraft had landing light an flashing beacon on at time of conflict. My radio, however was nonoperational. I'll never fly an aircraft west/O a radio again and I'll look long and hard for straight-INS.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CLOSE PROX TWO GA SMA ACFT IN TRAFFIC AT NON TWR ARPT.
Narrative: I MADE A 45 DEG ENTRANCE AT RWY MIDPOINT TO R HAND DOWNWIND FOR RWY 35 (ACTIVE) AT PATTERN ALT (PA). I OBSERVED NO ACFT ON DOWNWIND. I FLEW ACFT DOWNWIND AT PA TO ABOUT 1/2 MI DOWNWIND OF RWY THRESHOLD. I OBSERVED NO ACFT ON BASE OR FINAL. I TURNED R HAND BASE AT ABOUT 1/2 MI DOWNWIND OF THRESHOLD. I OBSERVED A HIGH WING TRAINER FLYING THE BASE HDG ABOVE PA ABOUT 1 MI FURTHER DOWNWIND. I SAW NO OTHER ACFT AN ANY ALT DOWNWIND OF THE RWY THRESHOLD. I DSNDED TO VIS G/S INDICATOR GLIDE PATH AND FLEW GLIDE PATH TOWARD THRESHOLD. MY GND SPD WAS LOW DUE TO HEAD WINDS OF 25-30 KTS. ANOTHER ACFT (HIGH WING, 4 OR MORE SEATS) EMERGED FROM UNDER MY ACFT ABOUT 1/8 MI DOWNWIND OF THRESHOLD. THE OTHER ACFT WAS ABOUT 100' BELOW. I DIDN'T SEE IT ON DOWNWIND, BASE OR LONG FINAL. IT MAY HAVE EXECUTED A LOW, FAST STRAIGHT-IN APCH TO THIS UNCTLED FIELD. MY ACFT HAD LNDG LIGHT AN FLASHING BEACON ON AT TIME OF CONFLICT. MY RADIO, HOWEVER WAS NONOPERATIONAL. I'LL NEVER FLY AN ACFT W/O A RADIO AGAIN AND I'LL LOOK LONG AND HARD FOR STRAIGHT-INS.
