Narrative:
We were a schedule flight out of dtw. We received a pushback clearance from our 'gate control' into a non-ATC controled alley. I specified the the mechanic pushing back he aircraft that we were cleared to push only into the alley, but he pushed us back right into an ATC controled taxiway! As I realized where we were being pushed I tried to communication with him, but he would not respond. Then, when he stopped the aircraft for the 'disconnect' function, I realized that the mechanic had a very strong oriental accent, and he did not understand what I was trying to tell him! Apparently, he pushed the aircraft to what he thought was the 'usual' spot for the gate. Fortunately, there was no other traffic around and there was no conflict. I explained the situation to the 'ground controller' and he advised there was 'no problem.' the potential for conflict was there, but we were fortunate to be leaving at a 'slow period' and traffic was minimal.
