Narrative:

[Incident occurred] during takeoff at kphl on runway 9L. At rotation; we heard a loud bang followed by a yaw to aircraft left. I was told by the first officer that the number 1 engine was showing an overtemp with an associated ECAM advisory. I; the captain; was able to maintain control; but the aircraft was slow to climb. The first officer ran the ECAM; which instructed pulling the thrust lever to idle. Tried to engaged the autopilot but it click off; flew [straight] ahead with permission from departure control. We reported our emergency and told departure we need to return to the field. We were having problems with the automation; especially the auto thrust system; [it] would not hold constant airspeed. On the first ILS approach; [we] engage auto pilot one more time. System did not intercept the GS and got us fast on the approach. At this time at approximately 2000 ft AGL; we broke off the approach and decided to disconnect the auto thrust system and auto pilot and I hand flew the ILS to 27R. Landed; stopped on the runway to have the fire department look us over. They stated that it looked like there was a small fire in the number 1 engine. We shut it down on the runway. No more indication of a fire; taxied to the gate; normal disembarkment of the passenger. No injuries.
