Narrative:
Early morning push at dfw. Pushback/start normal. ATIS notes that runway 17R and 18R closed. WX good. Air carrier X cleared to taxi to runway 17R. Requested confirmation of standard taxi. Again cleared to taxi to runway 17R. All operations normal to runway when tower cleared air carrier X for takeoff on runway 17R. All checklists completed and takeoff roll commenced. Around 140 KTS captain (PF) noted orange cones on left and right side of the runway (around 6000' down runway). Asked tower what was going on. He apologized and stated that the runway was still closed. Flight control later confirmed that runway was closed and had not been checked. ATIS was around 30 mins old and tower had cleared us to taxi to runway 17R (twice) and cleared us for takeoff on runway 17R. We did not question it and assumed it to be open.
