Narrative:
On landing rollout at dca runway 36 I was braking and using reverse thrust planning to use high speed turn off prior to intersection of runway 33. Controller gave us turn off instructions we understood to turn down runway 33. Since we saw an aircraft taxiing out we thought this was the reason he wanted us to bypass the high speed. On taxi in I was told to call tower supervisor on telephone. Speaking to him he said the controller wanted us to hold short of 33 since he had landing traffic. When the controller gave us the instructions we were in a high workload situation, reversers in use (loud) callouts being made and checking for a clear turn off. At this time it's very hard to hear a controller's instructions clearly and we only had a split second to react. These instructions should be given prior to landing, not during rollout.

Narrative: ON LNDG ROLLOUT AT DCA RWY 36 I WAS BRAKING AND USING REVERSE THRUST PLANNING TO USE HIGH SPD TURN OFF PRIOR TO INTXN OF RWY 33. CTLR GAVE US TURN OFF INSTRUCTIONS WE UNDERSTOOD TO TURN DOWN RWY 33. SINCE WE SAW AN ACFT TAXIING OUT WE THOUGHT THIS WAS THE REASON HE WANTED US TO BYPASS THE HIGH SPD. ON TAXI IN I WAS TOLD TO CALL TWR SUPVR ON TELEPHONE. SPEAKING TO HIM HE SAID THE CTLR WANTED US TO HOLD SHORT OF 33 SINCE HE HAD LNDG TFC. WHEN THE CTLR GAVE US THE INSTRUCTIONS WE WERE IN A HIGH WORKLOAD SITUATION, REVERSERS IN USE (LOUD) CALLOUTS BEING MADE AND CHKING FOR A CLR TURN OFF.
