Narrative:
Scheduled flight from sav to clt flying medium large transport. Cruising at FL230, the oil filter bypass light for #1 engine illuminated. We were on the chesterfield 5 arrival, past florence VOR going direct to chesterfield when light illuminated. First officer was flying the aircraft at this time, and I told him to get his flight manual out and we would do the abnormal procedure. I took control of the aircraft and we accomplished the abnormal procedure. The light remained illuminated so precautionary shutdown of the engine was called for as directed by the checklist. I declared an emergency with ATC and asked for direct clt. Engine was shut down using the checklist. Flight attendants were notified and prepared the cabin. I requested the crash fire rescue equipment equipment to be standing by in clt as a precaution and proceeded straight in to runway 36L. All procedures were handled professionally and expeditiously by first officer and the flight attendants. The landing was uneventful and we taxied to the gate. ATC handling was good and the whole system worked well. Cause of the oil filter bypass light is unknown at this time.

Narrative: SCHEDULED FLT FROM SAV TO CLT FLYING MLG. CRUISING AT FL230, THE OIL FILTER BYPASS LIGHT FOR #1 ENG ILLUMINATED. WE WERE ON THE CHESTERFIELD 5 ARR, PAST FLORENCE VOR GOING DIRECT TO CHESTERFIELD WHEN LIGHT ILLUMINATED. ENG WAS SHUT DOWN USING THE CHKLIST. FLT ATTENDANTS WERE NOTIFIED AND PREPARED THE CABIN. I REQUESTED THE CFR EQUIP TO BE STANDING BY IN CLT AS A PRECAUTION AND PROCEEDED STRAIGHT IN TO RWY 36L. ALL PROCS WERE HANDLED PROFESSIONALLY AND EXPEDITIOUSLY BY FO AND THE FLT ATTENDANTS. THE LNDG WAS UNEVENTFUL AND WE TAXIED TO THE GATE. ATC HANDLING WAS GOOD AND THE WHOLE SYS WORKED WELL. CAUSE OF THE OIL FILTER BYPASS LIGHT IS UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME.
