Narrative:
During approach while approximately 10 NM north of orl VOR we were cleared for visual to 18R, mco to cross at or above 3000 ft at 5 NM north of orl. At 5 NM north of orl, I began a gradual descent to 18R. About 1 NM north of orl I went through 2500 ft and over orl I was at 2300 ft. The copilot said he thought we were also cleared to cross orl at or above 2500 ft. This restriction is nowhere to be found on any commercial publication charts; it is, however, a common restriction on VFR approachs. Not always, but frequently. I had not heard the 2500 ft crossing restriction. No conflict resulted. Since this restriction (2500 ft at orl) is so common in visual conditions; and, since visual conditions are so common at mco, I would recommend a published commercial publication visual approach chart for mco. This chart could include the 2500 ft restriction over orl for approachs to 18R/left. These visual approach charts exist at many airports (phx, pdx, lga, etc) and would be very helpful at mco.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF ACR MLG ACFT INADVERTENTLY DSNDED BELOW ASSIGNED ALT DURING A VISUAL APCH.
Narrative: DURING APCH WHILE APPROX 10 NM N OF ORL VOR WE WERE CLRED FOR VISUAL TO 18R, MCO TO CROSS AT OR ABOVE 3000 FT AT 5 NM N OF ORL. AT 5 NM N OF ORL, I BEGAN A GRADUAL DSCNT TO 18R. ABOUT 1 NM N OF ORL I WENT THROUGH 2500 FT AND OVER ORL I WAS AT 2300 FT. THE COPLT SAID HE THOUGHT WE WERE ALSO CLRED TO CROSS ORL AT OR ABOVE 2500 FT. THIS RESTRICTION IS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND ON ANY COMMERCIAL PUBLICATION CHARTS; IT IS, HOWEVER, A COMMON RESTRICTION ON VFR APCHS. NOT ALWAYS, BUT FREQUENTLY. I HAD NOT HEARD THE 2500 FT XING RESTRICTION. NO CONFLICT RESULTED. SINCE THIS RESTRICTION (2500 FT AT ORL) IS SO COMMON IN VISUAL CONDITIONS; AND, SINCE VISUAL CONDITIONS ARE SO COMMON AT MCO, I WOULD RECOMMEND A PUBLISHED COMMERCIAL PUBLICATION VISUAL APCH CHART FOR MCO. THIS CHART COULD INCLUDE THE 2500 FT RESTRICTION OVER ORL FOR APCHS TO 18R/L. THESE VISUAL APCH CHARTS EXIST AT MANY ARPTS (PHX, PDX, LGA, ETC) AND WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL AT MCO.
