Narrative:
On vectors by ny approach control. Assigned 7000 ft and heading 180 degrees departing sparta VOR for vectors to runway 04L ewr. WX IFR -- thunderstorms and moderate turbulence. Went into an area of extremely heavy precipitation. Possibly hail. First officer flying and on autoplt. GPWS gave a continuous warning of 'terrain -- terrain.' first officer instinctively took aircraft off autoplt and applied maximum thrust while rotating aircraft up. Aircraft climbed approximately 300 ft as I was contacting approach to query possibility of terrain in area. Ny said 'no terrain' and asked us to return to 7000 ft due another aircraft in area at 8000 ft -- complied. GPWS still giving warning. Flight engineer pulled circuit breaker to silence. Suspected warning was triggered by heavy precipitation.

Title: FO OF WDB ACR ACFT DEVIATED FROM ASSIGNED ALT IN RESPONSE TO A GPWS WARNING.
Narrative: ON VECTORS BY NY APCH CTL. ASSIGNED 7000 FT AND HDG 180 DEGS DEPARTING SPARTA VOR FOR VECTORS TO RWY 04L EWR. WX IFR -- TSTMS AND MODERATE TURB. WENT INTO AN AREA OF EXTREMELY HVY PRECIPITATION. POSSIBLY HAIL. FO FLYING AND ON AUTOPLT. GPWS GAVE A CONTINUOUS WARNING OF 'TERRAIN -- TERRAIN.' FO INSTINCTIVELY TOOK ACFT OFF AUTOPLT AND APPLIED MAX THRUST WHILE ROTATING ACFT UP. ACFT CLBED APPROX 300 FT AS I WAS CONTACTING APCH TO QUERY POSSIBILITY OF TERRAIN IN AREA. NY SAID 'NO TERRAIN' AND ASKED US TO RETURN TO 7000 FT DUE ANOTHER ACFT IN AREA AT 8000 FT -- COMPLIED. GPWS STILL GIVING WARNING. FE PULLED CIRCUIT BREAKER TO SILENCE. SUSPECTED WARNING WAS TRIGGERED BY HVY PRECIPITATION.
