Narrative:
During takeoff roll near V1, multiple loud thumping noises occurred in rapid succession. The captain initiated the abort and brought the aircraft to a complete stop before the end of the runway. Both crew members thought there was a tire failure on the left side of the aircraft. Further investigation revealed a left engine problem. After having the crash crew check our left main gear, the aircraft was taxied clear of the runway. After sufficient time to allow the brakes to cool, the aircraft was towed back to the gate.
