Narrative:
As we reached our cruise altitude of FL370, the right oil filter caution message was displayed on the EICAS. Being the PNF on this flight, I referred to our cockpit operating manual to determine the appropriate actions required. The right oil filter caution message remained displayed after prescribed procedure had been followed, and after conferring with company dispatch and maintenance, a decision was reached to do a precautionary engine shutdown. A revised clearance was received from ARTCC and the flight was turned around and started back to the departure airport. Both pilots then initiated and completed the engine flameout or shutdown procedure and an emergency was declared with ARTCC. The flight was concluded with an uneventful landing at the departure airport.
