Narrative:
Aircraft was holding #1 for takeoff at san runway 27, south side. This taxi area is wide enough for 2 medium large transport type aircraft to taxi onto the runway without obstructing one another. Our aircraft was at far east side of runup area. We heard tower give an aircraft immediate takeoff clearance for what we thought was our flight. The very first part of the transmission was 'covered' by another transmission. We slowly and clearly repeated our flight number and acknowledged 'cleared for takeoff.' after liftoff as we were handed off to departure control, tower advised us that we had accepted takeoff clearance for another aircraft. Evidently the commuter turboprop beside and behind us was cleared first for takeoff. Because part of the transmission was 'covered up' we should have double-checked to determine if the clearance was for us. Unfortunately, we are human.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: UNAUTH TKOF PERFORMED BY ACR MLG AS CREW ACCEPTS TKOF CLRNC FOR ANOTHER ACFT.
Narrative: ACFT WAS HOLDING #1 FOR TKOF AT SAN RWY 27, S SIDE. THIS TAXI AREA IS WIDE ENOUGH FOR 2 MLG TYPE ACFT TO TAXI ONTO THE RWY WITHOUT OBSTRUCTING ONE ANOTHER. OUR ACFT WAS AT FAR E SIDE OF RUNUP AREA. WE HEARD TWR GIVE AN ACFT IMMEDIATE TKOF CLRNC FOR WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS OUR FLT. THE VERY FIRST PART OF THE XMISSION WAS 'COVERED' BY ANOTHER XMISSION. WE SLOWLY AND CLRLY REPEATED OUR FLT NUMBER AND ACKNOWLEDGED 'CLRED FOR TKOF.' AFTER LIFTOFF AS WE WERE HANDED OFF TO DEP CTL, TWR ADVISED US THAT WE HAD ACCEPTED TKOF CLRNC FOR ANOTHER ACFT. EVIDENTLY THE COMMUTER TURBOPROP BESIDE AND BEHIND US WAS CLRED FIRST FOR TKOF. BECAUSE PART OF THE XMISSION WAS 'COVERED UP' WE SHOULD HAVE DOUBLE-CHKED TO DETERMINE IF THE CLRNC WAS FOR US. UNFORTUNATELY, WE ARE HUMAN.
