Narrative:
Altitude bust on back bay 1 SID. We climbed to 7400 ft prior to fix (F147K) on the back bay 1 departure. I believe there are too many crossing and turns on the back bay 1 departure. Out of sna, we already do a special takeoff with power reduction at 1000 ft, plus look for light aircraft. Per operations manual out of sna we takeoff maximum power to 1000 ft (this day) power reduction to 78 percent for noise, flight director off, climb to 3000 ft at V2 plus 15, or shoreline and clean up. During clean-up with crossing altitudes and turn to make fix (F147K) we had 3 TA's on TCASII. When flight director is put on in our medium large transport, no altitude given on TCASII, it goes to heading select mode, so the HSI is getting navigation information from FMS and flight director is in heading mode. HSI gave me a turn to fix (F147K) and flight director wants to go straight ahead in heading mode. Made turn ok, but with looking for TA's and clean-up process, I climbed to 7400 ft before F147K. In my opinion, doing the special noise departure with power reduction and pitch angle and making altitude crossing and turns is too busy for the time and distance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FO OF AN MLG ACR ACFT OVERSHOT DEP FIX ALT DUE TO HVY WORKLOAD AND TCASII ALERT DISTRS.
Narrative: ALT BUST ON BACK BAY 1 SID. WE CLBED TO 7400 FT PRIOR TO FIX (F147K) ON THE BACK BAY 1 DEP. I BELIEVE THERE ARE TOO MANY XING AND TURNS ON THE BACK BAY 1 DEP. OUT OF SNA, WE ALREADY DO A SPECIAL TKOF WITH PWR REDUCTION AT 1000 FT, PLUS LOOK FOR LIGHT ACFT. PER OPS MANUAL OUT OF SNA WE TKOF MAX PWR TO 1000 FT (THIS DAY) PWR REDUCTION TO 78 PERCENT FOR NOISE, FLT DIRECTOR OFF, CLB TO 3000 FT AT V2 PLUS 15, OR SHORELINE AND CLEAN UP. DURING CLEAN-UP WITH XING ALTS AND TURN TO MAKE FIX (F147K) WE HAD 3 TA'S ON TCASII. WHEN FLT DIRECTOR IS PUT ON IN OUR MLG, NO ALT GIVEN ON TCASII, IT GOES TO HDG SELECT MODE, SO THE HSI IS GETTING NAV INFO FROM FMS AND FLT DIRECTOR IS IN HDG MODE. HSI GAVE ME A TURN TO FIX (F147K) AND FLT DIRECTOR WANTS TO GO STRAIGHT AHEAD IN HDG MODE. MADE TURN OK, BUT WITH LOOKING FOR TA'S AND CLEAN-UP PROCESS, I CLBED TO 7400 FT BEFORE F147K. IN MY OPINION, DOING THE SPECIAL NOISE DEP WITH PWR REDUCTION AND PITCH ANGLE AND MAKING ALT XING AND TURNS IS TOO BUSY FOR THE TIME AND DISTANCE.
