Narrative:
I am a CFI and was on an instrument training flight with a student. We had flown into wheeling and was taxiing out for departure. We called ground for taxi instructions and was given the following instructions: 'taxi runway 34 via runway 21.' we proceeded to taxi down runway 21 and then turned left to taxi to the end of 34. There are no txwys for runway 34. (See diagram). As we turned left onto runway 34 we were told by the controller that we had just improperly taxied onto an active runway, and that there were hold lines on runway 21, which we had not seen. The controller then told us to continue to taxi to the end of runway 34. There was, of course, no impropriety on the part of the controller, as taxi clearance is not authorization to taxi onto or cross the assigned runway. Therefore, I had to examine my actions to attempt to determine how I could have made such a serious mistake, and I believe the factors leading to this are as follows: first of all I did not see the hold lines because I was not expecting to see them, having never seen hold lines on a runway before. Also, being used to using airports with txwys, when given taxi instructions I am in the habit of taxiing to the end of the runway, via the taxiway, and there preparing for takeoff. Not being used to holding short of the runway, at the center of the runway, I was naturally inclined to proceed toward the end of the runway. This was a misjudgement on my part. Since this happened I have provided this scenario to several other pilots, who have all told me they also would have taxied onto the runway if given a similar clearance. They have all been surprised to learn that they would be improperly encroaching on an active runway. This incident has certainly been an eye opening experience for me, and I will certainly brief my students on this situation in the future. I believe this mistake could easily have been made by any pilot, at this or a similar airport, that the pilot is not familiar with, and I believe that requiring a hold short instruction, from the controller, would be a good idea.

Title: UNAUTH RWY ENTRY.
Narrative: I AM A CFI AND WAS ON AN INSTR TRAINING FLT WITH A STUDENT. WE HAD FLOWN INTO WHEELING AND WAS TAXIING OUT FOR DEP. ALSO, BEING USED TO USING ARPTS WITH TXWYS, WHEN GIVEN TAXI INSTRUCTIONS I AM IN THE HABIT OF TAXIING TO THE END OF THE RWY, VIA THE TXWY, AND THERE PREPARING FOR TKOF. NOT BEING USED TO HOLDING SHORT OF THE RWY, AT THE CTR OF THE RWY, I WAS NATURALLY INCLINED TO PROCEED TOWARD THE END OF THE RWY. THIS WAS A MISJUDGEMENT ON MY PART. SINCE THIS HAPPENED I HAVE PROVIDED THIS SCENARIO TO SEVERAL OTHER PLTS, WHO HAVE ALL TOLD ME THEY ALSO WOULD HAVE TAXIED ONTO THE RWY IF GIVEN A SIMILAR CLRNC. THEY HAVE ALL BEEN SURPRISED TO LEARN THAT THEY WOULD BE IMPROPERLY ENCROACHING ON AN ACTIVE RWY. THIS INCIDENT HAS CERTAINLY BEEN AN EYE OPENING EXPERIENCE FOR ME, AND I WILL CERTAINLY BRIEF MY STUDENTS ON THIS SIT IN THE FUTURE. I BELIEVE THIS MISTAKE COULD EASILY HAVE BEEN MADE BY ANY PLT, AT THIS OR A SIMILAR ARPT, THAT THE PLT IS NOT FAMILIAR WITH, AND I BELIEVE THAT REQUIRING A HOLD SHORT INSTRUCTION, FROM THE CTLR, WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA.
