Narrative:
Cleared ILS runway 18L, clt, 3600 ft MSL. Lost identify on both ILS's and had warning flags both sides. Approach said 'turn left 090 degree heading.' entered heavy rain, requested 010 degree heading for WX avoidance. Denied due to traffic. While IMC, moderate turbulence, heavy rain, GPWS activated with, 'terrain, terrain, pull up' added maximum power and climbed. Advised approach of climb due to GPWS warning. ATC reclred us to 4600 ft MSL. Controller asked again about what type of warning we got. He did not seem familiar with abbreviation 'GPWS' so we advised him we got a 'terrain, pull up' warning. No traffic conflict. We honored GPWS warning and climbed due to IMC conditions. Wrote up GPWS in maintenance log book upon arrival.
