Narrative:
After takeoff from dal, jan/tue/95, at XA00, departure cleared us to 5000 ft MSL. The altitude alerter sounded and the captain announced 'out of 4 for 5.' at about 4500 ft we got a frequency change. I checked in and confirmed climbing to 5000 ft. Controller gave us a heading change. While I was changing navigation frequencys and the captain was trying to select ADI and FMS modes on the flight director we climbed through 5000 ft. At 5700 ft the captain asked what altitude we were cleared to -- I said 5000 ft. He started to descend to 5000 ft when the controller called and asked our altitude. I said, 'leveling 5000 ft.' he said, 'yes, well, since you're almost there -- maintenance 6000 ft.' we climbed to 6000 ft. We are both fairly new to the aircraft. The captain was involved trying to set up the FMS and flight director. We were both distracted and climbed through our assigned altitude.

HE SAID, 'YES, WELL, SINCE YOU'RE ALMOST THERE -- MAINT 6000 FT.' WE CLBED TO 6000 FT. WE ARE BOTH FAIRLY NEW TO THE ACFT. THE CAPT WAS INVOLVED TRYING TO SET UP THE FMS AND FLT DIRECTOR. WE WERE BOTH DISTRACTED AND CLBED THROUGH OUR ASSIGNED ALT.
