Narrative:
I was flying the meinz 6 arrival to msp, tracking outbound on the mcw 358 degree radial. The first officer had turned in gep VOR by mistake instead of fgt. ZMP issued a crossing altitude of 10000 ft at peppr intersection. I was looking at his DME to plan this descent. Gep is approximately 32 NM northwest of fgt. We started the descent and I also tuned in gep VOR. The reason for our oversight was our previous two arrs to msp were on the dayle 4 arrival which uses gep VOR. Also on this day our first flight departed at XB35 CST and this was our third flight. My wake-up had been at XA00 CST. ATC questioned us as to whether we were planning to cross peppr at 10000 ft. At this point the first officer realized gep was tuned in rather than fgt. The first officer immediately notified ATC of the possibility of being unable to make the crossing restr. ATC reclred us to descend to 10000 ft with no crossing restr. We were 15 mi from peppr and descending through FL180. Our descent was made with spoilers to expedite to 10000 ft. There was not any conflict with other traffic.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC ALMOST MISSED ASSIGNED ALT RESTR.
Narrative: I WAS FLYING THE MEINZ 6 ARR TO MSP, TRACKING OUTBOUND ON THE MCW 358 DEG RADIAL. THE FO HAD TURNED IN GEP VOR BY MISTAKE INSTEAD OF FGT. ZMP ISSUED A XING ALT OF 10000 FT AT PEPPR INTXN. I WAS LOOKING AT HIS DME TO PLAN THIS DSCNT. GEP IS APPROX 32 NM NW OF FGT. WE STARTED THE DSCNT AND I ALSO TUNED IN GEP VOR. THE REASON FOR OUR OVERSIGHT WAS OUR PREVIOUS TWO ARRS TO MSP WERE ON THE DAYLE 4 ARR WHICH USES GEP VOR. ALSO ON THIS DAY OUR FIRST FLT DEPARTED AT XB35 CST AND THIS WAS OUR THIRD FLT. MY WAKE-UP HAD BEEN AT XA00 CST. ATC QUESTIONED US AS TO WHETHER WE WERE PLANNING TO CROSS PEPPR AT 10000 FT. AT THIS POINT THE FO REALIZED GEP WAS TUNED IN RATHER THAN FGT. THE FO IMMEDIATELY NOTIFIED ATC OF THE POSSIBILITY OF BEING UNABLE TO MAKE THE XING RESTR. ATC RECLRED US TO DSND TO 10000 FT WITH NO XING RESTR. WE WERE 15 MI FROM PEPPR AND DSNDING THROUGH FL180. OUR DSCNT WAS MADE WITH SPOILERS TO EXPEDITE TO 10000 FT. THERE WAS NOT ANY CONFLICT WITH OTHER TFC.
