Narrative:
We failed to meet a crossing restr on our descent into slc. When the clearance was given to us, I was busy retrieving ATIS, making a PA and finishing a landing data card. It wasn't until we were approximately 5 DME to the fix did I realize what was going on. It was at that point that the captain announced we were going to be high at the crossing restr. The first officer was attempting to descend even faster. We finally reached the altitude approximately 5 DME beyond the fix. At about the same time, ATC called and asked us if we were leveled at 17000 ft MSL. This problem arose because the captain and first officer were engrossed in a conversation and I was out of the loop listening to ATIS among other things. Our error was discovered when the captain finally crosschecked his DME. Supplemental information from acn 310205: center frequency was blocked due to numerous radio xmissions and no communication to advise center of our altitude was possible.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ALTDEV, XING RESTR NOT MET ON DSCNT.
Narrative: WE FAILED TO MEET A XING RESTR ON OUR DSCNT INTO SLC. WHEN THE CLRNC WAS GIVEN TO US, I WAS BUSY RETRIEVING ATIS, MAKING A PA AND FINISHING A LNDG DATA CARD. IT WASN'T UNTIL WE WERE APPROX 5 DME TO THE FIX DID I REALIZE WHAT WAS GOING ON. IT WAS AT THAT POINT THAT THE CAPT ANNOUNCED WE WERE GOING TO BE HIGH AT THE XING RESTR. THE FO WAS ATTEMPTING TO DSND EVEN FASTER. WE FINALLY REACHED THE ALT APPROX 5 DME BEYOND THE FIX. AT ABOUT THE SAME TIME, ATC CALLED AND ASKED US IF WE WERE LEVELED AT 17000 FT MSL. THIS PROB AROSE BECAUSE THE CAPT AND FO WERE ENGROSSED IN A CONVERSATION AND I WAS OUT OF THE LOOP LISTENING TO ATIS AMONG OTHER THINGS. OUR ERROR WAS DISCOVERED WHEN THE CAPT FINALLY XCHKED HIS DME. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 310205: CTR FREQ WAS BLOCKED DUE TO NUMEROUS RADIO XMISSIONS AND NO COM TO ADVISE CTR OF OUR ALT WAS POSSIBLE.
