Narrative:
Descending into las the clearance was cross crowe intersection at 11000 ft. Crowe intersection is 40 NM east of las on the 075 degree radial, or the runway 25L localizer. The first officer was new and doing an unacceptable job. After I intervened it was obvious to me we would not be able to comply with the crossing restr. I advised approach or center 52 NM east that we would be high and asked for instructions. The reply was (verbatim) 'ok, standby.' that was it. We crossed crowe about 2000 ft high. No further comments, etc. Cleared for visual and landed normally.
