Narrative:
Climbing out of sju to destination, ord, first officer was PF, experienced loud thumping, some vibration followed by strong yaw to left. Engine indications showed left engine at or below idle thrust with rising cautionary (yellow) egt. An engine shutdown was accomplished using fom procedure. Captain assumed control of aircraft and initiated return to sju. Flight attendants assisted in cabin preparation and soothing alarmed passenger. First officer alerted all necessary parties and accomplished all necessary checklists including compressor stall, engine shutdown, single engine approach and landing, overweight landing, engine relight, approach and final descent lists. Single engine driftdown was used and right engine was used only on final approach segment. Aircraft performed beautifully and single engine approach and landing was accomplished without incident. The experience level of all crew members involved was very high and repetitious training procedures from many yrs of training paid off.
