Narrative:
We were heading 055 degrees at 12000 ft, speed 320 KTS assigned in VMC conditions. TCASII showed traffic at 11500 ft and instructed us to climb. We stopped climb at 12700 ft with clear of conflict. When ATC advised of TCASII climb, he stated that traffic just popped and instructed us to turn to a heading of 90 degrees to avoid traffic. We leveled off at 12000 ft. Never saw traffic. Note: TCASII would have continued to indicate a 1500 FPM climb if we had not passed traffic.
