Narrative:
We were on J6 near colns intersection, prior to hvq. MCP was in heading mode when it should have been in LNAV. As aircraft departed airway at a turning point, ATC advised us that we were off the filed airway. We then returned to course. Captain had left system in heading after trimming the aircraft at cruise altitude.
