Narrative:
I was on my way to vero beach coming from the south tracking inbound on the vero beach VOR. I was communicating with vero beach and was told to report mid-field downwind for my assigned runway. I thought I was on a 45 degree for my assigned runway, but 4 mi out I noticed this was not vero beach. I then told vero beach I made a mistake and that I was heading towards the wrong airport. Vero beach told me I should call ft pierce and let them know what was going on, but I thought I would get in trouble if I did, so I never called them up at all. I eventually landed safely in vero beach and everything was fine from there on out. In the future this will never happen again because I will be sure to study my airport diagrams more and be more aware of my location. And if something similar were to occur again, I would not hesitate to communicate and confess to all the parties involved. I believe that this problem was caused by my own lack of attention concerning my exact whereabouts.
