PIC of B727-200 fails to proceed direct to intersection using GPS. He had forgotten to select the mode control selector to the 'auxiliary navigation' position so that the GPS could direct the autoplt. ARTCC radar controller notices the non compliance.

Narrative:

Frequency: 124.7, altitude: 15000 ft. ATC facility: ZMA. Location: dhp 210 degrees 45 NM approximately. Under ZMA's direction to proceed direct wever on dvall 1 arrival. Entered direct wever in GPS but autoplt was not on auxiliary navigation. After approximately 2 mins ZMA queried us as to our going direct wever. Noticed mistake and turned towards wever. Asked mia if there was a conflict and was told no. No further action was taken by us.
