Narrative:
Approximately 11 mi southeast of ojc, I called the tower to advise we were inbound with ATIS. While monitoring tower frequency, after being advised to enter a left downwind for runway 18, I heard tower talking to an arrow or archer who reported being 8 mi southeast preparing for a practice GPS runway 36 approach. By this time, I was 8.5 mi southeast and began looking for the other aircraft who reported to be at 3000 ft. I located the other aircraft when it was 400-500 ft and at roughly 90 degrees to my right on what appeared a collision course. I immediately hit the throttle, pulled back on the stick and believe we were able to put 200-300 ft between us vertically as the other plane passed directly beneath us. I do not believe the other aircraft saw us and I did not see any evasive action on their part. Contributing factors: my distraction inside the cockpit preparing to land, a training flight with its own inside distrs, opposing traffic instrument approach.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SMA GA INBOUND OJC CLRED TO ENTER DOWNWIND RWY 18. ARROW SE ARPT WAS PREPARING FOR PRACTICE GPS RWY 36. SAW TFC 90 DEGS TO THE R AND EXECUTED IMMEDIATE CLB. TFC PASSED DIRECTLY BELOW 300 FT.
Narrative: APPROX 11 MI SE OF OJC, I CALLED THE TWR TO ADVISE WE WERE INBOUND WITH ATIS. WHILE MONITORING TWR FREQ, AFTER BEING ADVISED TO ENTER A L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 18, I HEARD TWR TALKING TO AN ARROW OR ARCHER WHO RPTED BEING 8 MI SE PREPARING FOR A PRACTICE GPS RWY 36 APCH. BY THIS TIME, I WAS 8.5 MI SE AND BEGAN LOOKING FOR THE OTHER ACFT WHO RPTED TO BE AT 3000 FT. I LOCATED THE OTHER ACFT WHEN IT WAS 400-500 FT AND AT ROUGHLY 90 DEGS TO MY R ON WHAT APPEARED A COLLISION COURSE. I IMMEDIATELY HIT THE THROTTLE, PULLED BACK ON THE STICK AND BELIEVE WE WERE ABLE TO PUT 200-300 FT BTWN US VERTLY AS THE OTHER PLANE PASSED DIRECTLY BENEATH US. I DO NOT BELIEVE THE OTHER ACFT SAW US AND I DID NOT SEE ANY EVASIVE ACTION ON THEIR PART. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: MY DISTR INSIDE THE COCKPIT PREPARING TO LAND, A TRAINING FLT WITH ITS OWN INSIDE DISTRS, OPPOSING TFC INST APCH.
