Narrative:
Descending from ZDC airspace to roa airspace, watching for crossing traffic. Dash 8 had passed under us and was well clear to our right. Center advised we showed 200 ft low. Altimeter read 60 ft low which I reported, altimeter setting change added 10 ft. We were waiting for altitude capture to take effect and it did not engage at 13000 ft, our assigned leveloff. We corrected manually but overshot 60 ft. Neither pilot totally familiar with this autoplt system and were experimenting with it. Center's call of 100 ft more than we indicate off is the second occasion where mode C not agree with altimeter. Plan to check with several ctrs as to mode C readout and if it is off, plan to have it adjusted.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LTT ACFT IN DSCNT WAS ADVISED BY CTR CTLR THAT THEIR ALT READOUT WAS 200 FT LOW. ALTIMETER WAS MISSET, BUT ALSO RPTR CAPT SAYS THE ACFT MODE C WAS IN ERROR.
Narrative: DSNDING FROM ZDC AIRSPACE TO ROA AIRSPACE, WATCHING FOR XING TFC. DASH 8 HAD PASSED UNDER US AND WAS WELL CLR TO OUR R. CTR ADVISED WE SHOWED 200 FT LOW. ALTIMETER READ 60 FT LOW WHICH I RPTED, ALTIMETER SETTING CHANGE ADDED 10 FT. WE WERE WAITING FOR ALT CAPTURE TO TAKE EFFECT AND IT DID NOT ENGAGE AT 13000 FT, OUR ASSIGNED LEVELOFF. WE CORRECTED MANUALLY BUT OVERSHOT 60 FT. NEITHER PLT TOTALLY FAMILIAR WITH THIS AUTOPLT SYS AND WERE EXPERIMENTING WITH IT. CTR'S CALL OF 100 FT MORE THAN WE INDICATE OFF IS THE SECOND OCCASION WHERE MODE C NOT AGREE WITH ALTIMETER. PLAN TO CHK WITH SEVERAL CTRS AS TO MODE C READOUT AND IF IT IS OFF, PLAN TO HAVE IT ADJUSTED.
