Narrative:
ATC facility: dulles approach. Location: between dca and iad on vectors. Departed dca on runway 18. Given right turn to 300 degrees. In the turn, during sterile period, flight attendant called and reported a burning smell. Captain off radio, first officer flying, then told to proceed direct linden. First officer turned right instead of left while tuning station. Overshot the direct course by about 30 degrees, realized error prior to rolling out and immediately rolled into left bank to go direct. Were switched to dulles approach. He asked what heading were we given. We said direct linden and that we had just tuned it in. Nothing else was said.
