Narrative:
Climbed through assigned altitude by 300 ft. Corrected back to assigned altitude immediately. Departure control said 'maintain 5000 ft' and that's all. Occurred at approximately XA00Z. Altitude alerter did not function properly. No evasive action was required. Less reliance on altitude alerters and constant awareness of current aircraft position in compliance with ATC instructions. Should remedy the problem.
