Narrative:
We had just landed on runway 5 at cak. The captain was flying. The tower controller cleared us to 'taxi to the gate.' the captain turned at the first right onto runway 1, which was active, instead of turning on the first taxiway. The controller immediately notified us that we were not cleared onto runway 1. The captain explained to me that since no one was using the runway at that time, he thought he could use it to shorten our taxi -- even though he knew it was not technically following the clearance.

Title: AN ACR FLC FLYING A BAE ATP AT CAK TAXIED ONTO AN ACTIVE RWY AFTER LNDG.
Narrative: WE HAD JUST LANDED ON RWY 5 AT CAK. THE CAPT WAS FLYING. THE TWR CTLR CLRED US TO 'TAXI TO THE GATE.' THE CAPT TURNED AT THE FIRST R ONTO RWY 1, WHICH WAS ACTIVE, INSTEAD OF TURNING ON THE FIRST TXWY. THE CTLR IMMEDIATELY NOTIFIED US THAT WE WERE NOT CLRED ONTO RWY 1. THE CAPT EXPLAINED TO ME THAT SINCE NO ONE WAS USING THE RWY AT THAT TIME, HE THOUGHT HE COULD USE IT TO SHORTEN OUR TAXI -- EVEN THOUGH HE KNEW IT WAS NOT TECHNICALLY FOLLOWING THE CLRNC.
