Air Traffic Incident | Operational Error |
Narrative:
Flight from cle to atl. Were holding at macey on outbound leg at FL330. Initially received TA on TCASII and saw traffic on scope at 11 O'clock, same altitude. Soon thereafter, received RA with instructions to climb. Traffic now inside 5 mi, same altitude. Initiated climb to FL338. Traffic was sighted visually at 11 O'clock and less than 1000 ft, heading southeast. Returned to FL330 and inquired ATC about the incident. They stated it was 'their bad.' I asked for a phone number. Flight continued with no further problems. Called ATC on the ground and they informed me they had already pulled the tapes and were investigating the incident. They also said the traffic was at FL330, that had been cleared to amg, and that routing took them through the holding pattern.

Title: MD88 FLC INITIATES TCASII MANEUVER DUE TO XING ACR THROUGH MD88'S ZTL HOLDING PATTERN.
Narrative: FLT FROM CLE TO ATL. WERE HOLDING AT MACEY ON OUTBOUND LEG AT FL330. INITIALLY RECEIVED TA ON TCASII AND SAW TFC ON SCOPE AT 11 O'CLOCK, SAME ALT. SOON THEREAFTER, RECEIVED RA WITH INSTRUCTIONS TO CLB. TFC NOW INSIDE 5 MI, SAME ALT. INITIATED CLB TO FL338. TFC WAS SIGHTED VISUALLY AT 11 O'CLOCK AND LESS THAN 1000 FT, HDG SE. RETURNED TO FL330 AND INQUIRED ATC ABOUT THE INCIDENT. THEY STATED IT WAS 'THEIR BAD.' I ASKED FOR A PHONE NUMBER. FLT CONTINUED WITH NO FURTHER PROBS. CALLED ATC ON THE GND AND THEY INFORMED ME THEY HAD ALREADY PULLED THE TAPES AND WERE INVESTIGATING THE INCIDENT. THEY ALSO SAID THE TFC WAS AT FL330, THAT HAD BEEN CLRED TO AMG, AND THAT ROUTING TOOK THEM THROUGH THE HOLDING PATTERN.
