Narrative:
I do not know what caused the fumes throughout the aircraft. After the galley flight attendant turned the aft ovens on, we all smelled fumes in both cabins. We checked everything to see if something burning was the cause. We found nothing. We notified the cockpit and was told to turn off the ovens and then turn them on again, after which the captain advised us that we were returning to ewr. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated that a light went off in the cockpit, which made up the captain's mind to go back to ewr. They changed planes and the cockpit crew in ewr.
