Narrative:
During climb out from mci, at approximately 1200 ft, left engine experienced 2 brief uncommanded reductions of power. N1 and N2 spooled down to about 60%. Engine recovered both times to climb disconnected autothrottles -- throttles remained in fixed position. Less than 30 seconds later, left engine failed. N1 and N2 spooled to windmill RPM. Did not notice the left oil pressure reading. Elected not to restart engine. Declared an emergency -- rtb to mci for single engine procedures and landing. Did not land overweight. First officer landing. Fire trucks met us on the taxiway and made a visual inspection of left engine. No exterior defects. Taxi to gate and parked. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated maintenance has not advised the maintenance action and findings on the failed engine. Callback conversation with reporter acn 508082 revealed the following information: the reporter said no information has been received from maintenance on the failed engine. The reporter stated maintenance normally does not advise the crews of findings on maintenance items.
