Narrative:
It was close to 'go time' when called out for #2 FMC CDU was 'blank.' went out to aircraft, could not restore. Called over radio for FMC CDU to be ordered for aircraft X. Was told part ordered and in stock. Picked up part, had someone check to see if any software was needed. Answer was 'no.' maintenance manual: saud check for fail lights, that a position in it displayed, and dim knobs are checked for lighting. We researched for correct part and notified downtown control center about problem. Found out that was already on placard and part was on order. It is the technician's ultimate responsibility to check and verify. Will now check parts that are already installed, parts ordered by someone else, and from 'memory' against maintenance computer system ipc.
