Narrative:

Teterboro 5 SID requires departing aircraft to maintain 1500 ft MSL until passing teb 4.5 DME. Captain set 2000 ft in altitude selector on flight guidance panel intending to use VNAV function of FMS to comply with the 1500 ft restr. The flight guidance computer did not command a level off at 1500 ft as expected. The PF climbed to 1900 ft before descending to 1500 ft. Fortunately, no traffic conflicts resulted. Lesson learned: do not set the altitude selector any higher or lower then the altitude to which you are cleared until that altitude is captured. Then the next anticipated altitude on a SID or STAR may be selected.
