Narrative:
Pilot violated class B by climbing into class B. Class B limit was 1700 ft MSL, aircraft climbed to 2400 ft MSL. Teb was busy with congested IFR departures. Pilot elected a VFR departure to expedite handling. Pilot assumed floor of class B was no lower than 2500 ft MSL. ATC provided no advisories related to class B clearance or limits. When pilot leveled at 2400 ft, teb local controller advised that pilot was in class B without clearance, dscnd immediately. Pilot complied. At that time, pilot was within 3 miles of 3000 ft MSL class B ceiling. Contributing factors were: 1) traffic saturation of teb. 2) pilot's insufficient flight briefing and charts available for VFR. 3) ATC did not provide handoff to departure with advisories.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A MOONEY SINGLE PLT VIOLATED N90'S CLASS B AIRSPACE AFTER DEPARTING TEB.
Narrative: PLT VIOLATED CLASS B BY CLBING INTO CLASS B. CLASS B LIMIT WAS 1700 FT MSL, ACFT CLBED TO 2400 FT MSL. TEB WAS BUSY WITH CONGESTED IFR DEPS. PLT ELECTED A VFR DEP TO EXPEDITE HANDLING. PLT ASSUMED FLOOR OF CLASS B WAS NO LOWER THAN 2500 FT MSL. ATC PROVIDED NO ADVISORIES RELATED TO CLASS B CLRNC OR LIMITS. WHEN PLT LEVELED AT 2400 FT, TEB LCL CTLR ADVISED THAT PLT WAS IN CLASS B WITHOUT CLRNC, DSCND IMMEDIATELY. PLT COMPLIED. AT THAT TIME, PLT WAS WITHIN 3 MILES OF 3000 FT MSL CLASS B CEILING. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE: 1) TFC SATURATION OF TEB. 2) PLT'S INSUFFICIENT FLT BRIEFING AND CHARTS AVAILABLE FOR VFR. 3) ATC DID NOT PROVIDE HANDOFF TO DEP WITH ADVISORIES.
