Narrative:
Air carrier X was on downwind to runway 17C at dfw. Aircraft Y was being worked by dallas north. I 'quick looked' dallas north sector to scan for traffic. I descended air carrier X from 6000 to 4000 in prearranged coordination airspace. About a minute later I observed aircraft Y over ads airport at 4000 on a converging course when the aircraft were approximately 4 miles apart. I immediately turned air carrier X to a heading of 260 and advised air carrier X about aircraft Y. Conflict alert activated. Air carrier X didn't see aircraft Y. Separation was lost for about 10 seconds and then reestablished on diverging courses. Recommendation; I recommend making point outs instead of using prearranged coordination airspace.

Title: D10 Controller described a loss of separation event when the facility 'pre-arranged' coordination procedure failed and a conflict developed between two DFW arrivals; the reporter suggests point outs should be used in lieu of the existing procedure.
