Narrative:
We were cleared for takeoff on runway 18R at memphis. About halfway through the takeoff roll I noticed the airline's medium large transport that had landed before us had turned off onto a perpendicular taxiway but was holding considerably short of the parallel taxiway for another aircraft which had landed ahead of them and cleared the runway further down. They were northbound on the parallel and air carrier-medium large transport was holding short of the parallel to give them clearance I guess, evidently he forgot about his tail because it was clear of the runway but not behind the hold line on the taxiway. I deviated to the right of centerline on the runway to provide additional clearance for my left wing. We were just leaving the ground as we went by. Due to the darkness we couldn't really tell the medium large transport position on the taxiway at the beginning of our takeoff roll. Being busy with setting takeoff thrust, etc. This situation did not become evident to us until relatively close to the event. This situation posed no serious threat to us due to a narrow wingspan but a large widebody might have had deadly consequences. No comment was made over the radio by any parties involved.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ON TKOF THE FLT CREW OF AN MLG VEERED SLIGHTLY TO RIGHT ON THE RWY TO FURTHER THE CLRNC BETWEEN THEIR LEFT WING TIP AND THE TAIL ON AN MLG HOLDING ON THE TXWY. TAIL OF THE HOLDING ACFT WAS CLEAR OF THE EDGE OF THE RWY BUT NOT CLEAR OF THE HOLD LINE.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF ON RWY 18R AT MEMPHIS. ABOUT HALFWAY THROUGH THE TKOF ROLL I NOTICED THE AIRLINE'S MLG THAT HAD LANDED BEFORE US HAD TURNED OFF ONTO A PERPENDICULAR TXWY BUT WAS HOLDING CONSIDERABLY SHORT OF THE PARALLEL TXWY FOR ANOTHER ACFT WHICH HAD LANDED AHEAD OF THEM AND CLRED THE RWY FURTHER DOWN. THEY WERE NBOUND ON THE PARALLEL AND ACR-MLG WAS HOLDING SHORT OF THE PARALLEL TO GIVE THEM CLRNC I GUESS, EVIDENTLY HE FORGOT ABOUT HIS TAIL BECAUSE IT WAS CLEAR OF THE RWY BUT NOT BEHIND THE HOLD LINE ON THE TXWY. I DEVIATED TO THE RIGHT OF CENTERLINE ON THE RWY TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL CLRNC FOR MY LEFT WING. WE WERE JUST LEAVING THE GND AS WE WENT BY. DUE TO THE DARKNESS WE COULDN'T REALLY TELL THE MLG POSITION ON THE TXWY AT THE BEGINNING OF OUR TKOF ROLL. BEING BUSY WITH SETTING TKOF THRUST, ETC.
