Narrative:
En route just prior to the midpoint form mdw to mke, while being radar vectored, we had a near miss with an air carrier widebody transport. We were on a 340 degree heading at 6000' and had just recently broke out of the clouds. The first officer had just received mke ATIS and I was briefing the approach into mke. I was receiving a line check and the check airmen in the jump seat informed me of the traffic appearing between 10 and 11 O'clock. The widebody transport appeared to be at 6000' also, and was crossing from left to right heading approximately 060 degrees and less than 2 mi away. Within seconds chicago departure control (frequency 125.0) commanded a left turn heading 320 degrees and an immediate climb to 7000'. We executed the turn and climb immediately and passed above and behind the widebody transport.

Narrative: ENRTE JUST PRIOR TO THE MIDPOINT FORM MDW TO MKE, WHILE BEING RADAR VECTORED, WE HAD A NEAR MISS WITH AN ACR WDB. WE WERE ON A 340 DEG HDG AT 6000' AND HAD JUST RECENTLY BROKE OUT OF THE CLOUDS. THE F/O HAD JUST RECEIVED MKE ATIS AND I WAS BRIEFING THE APCH INTO MKE. I WAS RECEIVING A LINE CHK AND THE CHK AIRMEN IN THE JUMP SEAT INFORMED ME OF THE TFC APPEARING BTWN 10 AND 11 O'CLOCK. THE WDB APPEARED TO BE AT 6000' ALSO, AND WAS XING FROM LEFT TO RIGHT HDG APPROX 060 DEGS AND LESS THAN 2 MI AWAY. WITHIN SECS CHICAGO DEP CTL (FREQ 125.0) COMMANDED A LEFT TURN HDG 320 DEGS AND AN IMMEDIATE CLB TO 7000'. WE EXECUTED THE TURN AND CLB IMMEDIATELY AND PASSED ABOVE AND BEHIND THE WDB.
