Narrative:
Eastbound on J2, toward elp, both pilots dialed in cjs instead of elp. Nearly ran into mexican airspace; saved by center vector. Note: both pilots independently (and mistakenly) selected wrong VOR from high chart. Recommend: increased vigilance by crews (of course), but also improved depiction on chart. This is a murphy waiting to happen. By the controller's tone, I suspect it does happen a lot. There is a fix!
