Narrative:
We were at 6000', 180 degree heading approximately 17 mi wnw from atl, getting vectors for runway 8L final approach. We further received a left turn to 120 degrees. We both lowered our heads into the cockpit to set the heading bug to 120 degrees per company procedure, and the captain started the left turn to 120 degrees. As I lifted my head back up, I saw an medium large transport at my 2 O'clock position and getting closer. I took the controls and pushed them forward. I remember noticing the altimeter reading 5800' as the medium large transport came up and over us. I reserve the right to change all or any statement made as more information becomes available.
