Narrative:
The reporting pilot was cleared for a straight-in to runway 24 at mht. At about a mile out, the controller cleared us to land runway 24. Again, at 1/2 mi he cleared us to land. Then he cleared an mdt Y for takeoff on runway 35. 24 intersects 35 at the departure end of 35. The mdt made a low trajectory takeoff. I could see that our paths of flight would conflict if I continued my approach to land. At that time -- 300 ft altitude MSL and 1/2 mi -- I told the controller, 'I am initiating a go around T avoid a midair.' the controller then gave me a telephone number to call the facility on landing. As I turned downwind for runway 35, as directed by the controller, I noted that the mdt crossed the intersection of 24/35 at 150 to 200 ft AGL, where I would have been had I continued my landing approach to 24. When on the ground, I called the number given by the controller. Meanwhile, my pilot passenger and I concurred that we would definitely have had a midair had we continued the landing phase of our flight. I spoke with the shift chief in the mht tower (the controller was busy with traffic).
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SMA IS CLRED TO LAND, THEN CTLR CLRS ANOTHER ACFT OFF AN INTERSECTING RWY. LNDG ACFT GOES AROUND.
Narrative: THE RPTING PLT WAS CLRED FOR A STRAIGHT-IN TO RWY 24 AT MHT. AT ABOUT A MILE OUT, THE CTLR CLRED US TO LAND RWY 24. AGAIN, AT 1/2 MI HE CLRED US TO LAND. THEN HE CLRED AN MDT Y FOR TKOF ON RWY 35. 24 INTERSECTS 35 AT THE DEP END OF 35. THE MDT MADE A LOW TRAJECTORY TKOF. I COULD SEE THAT OUR PATHS OF FLT WOULD CONFLICT IF I CONTINUED MY APCH TO LAND. AT THAT TIME -- 300 FT ALT MSL AND 1/2 MI -- I TOLD THE CTLR, 'I AM INITIATING A GAR T AVOID A MIDAIR.' THE CTLR THEN GAVE ME A TELEPHONE NUMBER TO CALL THE FACILITY ON LNDG. AS I TURNED DOWNWIND FOR RWY 35, AS DIRECTED BY THE CTLR, I NOTED THAT THE MDT CROSSED THE INTXN OF 24/35 AT 150 TO 200 FT AGL, WHERE I WOULD HAVE BEEN HAD I CONTINUED MY LNDG APCH TO 24. WHEN ON THE GND, I CALLED THE NUMBER GIVEN BY THE CTLR. MEANWHILE, MY PLT PAX AND I CONCURRED THAT WE WOULD DEFINITELY HAVE HAD A MIDAIR HAD WE CONTINUED THE LNDG PHASE OF OUR FLT. I SPOKE WITH THE SHIFT CHIEF IN THE MHT TWR (THE CTLR WAS BUSY WITH TFC).
