Narrative:
We were being vectored for VOR 12R. Were told to descend to 5100 ft MSL. At 5100 ft on a 250 degree heading, 25 wsw of sjc, GPWS 'pull-up' 'ground proximity' and aural warnings went off in cockpit. PF executed pull-up to 5800 ft. PNF advised ATC we were climbing. ATC said negative. We said we had to. ATC said terrain was not a problem. We leveled at 5800 ft. ATC advised to descend to 5100 ft and we complied. Bases of clouds were ragged and virga all around. This occurrence in IMC. Also ATC knew we were deviating because of terrain even though PNF made no mention of it.
