Narrative:
Departed phx on the buckeye 2 for a phx-sna turn. Captain hand flew to 12000 ft. He programmed the FMC for direct bxk and engaged LNAV (VNAV was already engaged per company procedure). I was giving the off report to the company on the other radio. The altitude alerter had been set and verified per company procedure. After talking to company and reporting back on frequency, I took a frequency change to ZAB. I had just tuned the frequency when I saw our altitude was 15400 ft with a clearance limit of 15000 ft. I advised the PF and pushed over the aircraft. After leveling at 15000 ft. I contacted ZAB. No mention was made and we offered no explanation. We had verified clrncs, coordinated communications, and generally flew by the book. I have flown with this individual before and know him to be an excellent pilot, leader, and scrupulous observer of company procedure. I have no explanation.
