Narrative:

ATC cleared us direct to petis (sb). Both capts and first officer's raw data on RMI indicated direct to petis as well as INS indicating 2 mi. ATC advised we were 2 mi south of course. We were delayed at departure airport due to captain's HSI inoperative. The captain's HSI completely died en route. Therefore, captain had no navigation on his side.
